On Sunday, March 9, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati held the annual Rite of Election for Catechumens coming into the church during the Easter Vigil. The Rite of Election is preceded by the Rite of Sending which happens at the Catechumens individual parishes. The Rite of Sending offers the local community an opportunity to send the Catechumens forth to the Rite of Election with prayerful support. At the beginning of Lent, the Rite of “Election” or “Enrollment of Names”, the Church having heard the testimony of godparents and catechists confirming the Catechumens intentions, discerns their state of preparation and decides that they may proceed to the Paschal Sacraments. In this step the Church makes her “Election”, ensuring the Catechumens are fit to take part in the next celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation. It is called “Election” because the admission made by the Church is founded on election by God, in whose name the Church acts. It is also called “Enrollment of Names” because the Catechumens write their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of their faithfulness. Each parish has a Book of the Elect and the Catechumens names were written in the Books of the parishes where they were entering. Each Book was brought to the Rite of Election and presented to Father Brian Phelps, the Dean of Emmanuel Deanery, who was standing in for Archbishop Schnurr. Congratulations to the six people who were presented from Northwest-V.They are Glenda Fear and her daughter Addyson, from St. Denis, who attended along with their sponsors Alex Wendel and Grace Davis. From St. Nicholas Parish, Shannon Circle and her daughter Madison Vantine were presented along with their sponsors Nick Borchers and Renee Borchers who are pictured above with Father Ned and Deacon Mike. Ian and Josefina Riffel, along with their sponsors Josh and Kerri Burns and Father Matt Feist, attended the Rite of Election in Spanish at Immaculate Conception Parish in Dayton on March 9. Congratulations to all our Catechumens for making this step and we offer them our continued prayers & support. This weekend we will begin the Scrutinies, the next phase of the OCIA process. All these Catechumens along with three other Candidates are continuing on their faith journey to the Easter Vigil. The Candidates who are already baptized are Kylie Lauth (St. Remy), Gabe Phillips (St. Denis), and Judith York (St. Louis). We offer up our prayers & support as we all journey together towards greater faith and relationship with Jesus.
