The first Catholic to arrive to Greenville (known as Charleston at the time) arrived on New Year's Day in 1833. Bishop John Purcell arranged for priests from the surrounding towns to provide service on 2 acres donated by Mr. Caron. Before long, they realized they needed a larger more suitable building to hold mass. In 1863, they purchased a small brick church (previously a baptist congregation). A school was built in 1888 which overseen by the Sisters of Charity of Mt. St. Joseph, Ohio. After deciding that the old church needed extensive repairs, preparations for a new church began in 1889. The church was dedicated to Our Lady in 1902.
