Prior to 1846, settlers in the Russia area had to travel to St. Valbert (where present day St. Valbert's cemetery is located off of St. Rt. 47). Due to distance, weather conditions, and wolves in the area, a log chapel was built on the farm of Jean Jacques Debrosse. According to legend, the communities of Frenchtown and Russia had a competition to see who could build a church first. The winner was to receive a keg of whiskey, but it is unclear who won. A "real" church was built in 1868 around the old log church. However, due to that church not being constructed safely, the cornerstone for the current church was laid in 1890.
